Hi, I’m Steven Savio– a poetry enthusiast hoping to spread my appreciation for poetry and public speaking to others. To encourage newbie students and veteran teachers to give voice to poetry in such a way that upholds its beauty or even enhances the meaning of the poem through tonality, volume, diction, accent, and all the tools of the speaker.
I created this site, PoetryAce, after years of reciting poetry in high school Speech/Debate competitions and wishing there was a reliable source to LISTEN to poetry. I was exhausted by the monotone readings of The Writer’s Almanac and the shoddy selections you’d get elsewhere. I just wanted the best poems with a solid reciting. Which brings me to now, where I am following the age-old advice: “If you want things done right…”
AND it’s more than that! I want to encourage the use of poetry as a voice! To instill readers with the creativity of poetry, not just as a written form, but as an art of verbal expression. Poetry is full of sounds, and reciting a poem can be as essential to the art as the writing of it. I believe that by reciting poetry in a way that respects the integrity of the poem– or in a way that contributes to the artistry of the piece– that posting poetry in our social media statuses could become as commonplace as posting country lyrics. And ultimately that is where poetry should stand as an art– at the forefront of verbal expression.
Poetry is utterly human.
Poetry is ordinary language raised to the Nth power. Poetry is boned with ideas, nerved and blooded with emotions, all held together by the delicate, tough skin of words. – Paul Engle
BUT mostly! I want to share poetry that people can enjoy and share as well.
You can stay loyal to the art of poetry by joining the site’s newsletter. I promise if you do, I will keep you engaged in the world’s most therapeutic art. I would also recommend following on Facebook, Twitter or Google+ to discuss, rate, and comment on poetry you heard here.
